Advanced Notice – School Meals – Price change from April 2017

We have received a letter from Herts Catering Ltd advising us of a change to the HCL meal price for primary meals after the Easter break. The meals will be increasing from £2.25 per meal to £2.30 per meal from April 17. This is an unprecedented change mid year which they explain is due to the introduction of the National Living Wage in April 16 which has had a significant impact on their staff costs.  Over half of HCL staff are currently on this rate, which is expected to increase again by another 30p per hour (4.2%) from April 17.

Added to this, by rigorous and robust scrutiny of suppliers to provide quality ingredients, including organic and local produce, HCL are also having to face increases in food costs in the region of 6 – 8%.  Despite their business efficiency to contain these impacts on their customers, HCL feel they have no choice but to increase the meal prices.  The 5p increase equates to 2.2%.

On the plus side, in line with their commitment to provide choice and quality, HCL have expanded their array of menu choices for schools dependent on the school meal uptake.  We are pleased to confirm that from the beginning of the summer term, HCL will now offer our children a daily selection of: a hot meal or fish main meal, a hot vegetarian meal, and an additional option of a jacket potato or pasta bake, and a chilled packed lunch, followed by a range of desert options including fresh fruit and yogurt pots.

Children will continue to be able to benefit from a school meal every day or the option to choose either/both a Wednesday/Friday.  Please note if your child wishes to change their current meal arrangements, please collect a form from the School Office and return completed at least one week before the end of the current term.  Thank you.

30 Hours Free Childcare

For parents of children starting Nursery in September this year, St Andrew’s Primary, in partnership with Bobtails Playgroup will be able to offer eligible parents 30 hours free childcare provision on our site.  This is a new entitlement for working parents of 3 and 4 year old children.  This is an extra 15 hours per week, in addition to the children’s existing 15 hours free early education funding (currently taken in Nursery each morning).

It is expected that the provision will be offered as follows:

St Andrew’s will be offering 2 full days from 8.45 – 11.45am (usual Nursery provision) + 11.45 – 2.45pm additional Nursery cover on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon = 6 hours per day.

Bobtails will be offering 3 full days from 9.00am – 12.00 noon and 12.00 noon to 3.00pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays = 6 hours per day.

As the funding requires the provision for 6 hours per day to be seamless, parents will have the opportunity to purchase further ‘top up’ childcare to cover until 3.15/3.30pm from St Andrew’s or to 3.30pm from Bobtails as required.

Further details can be found on the school website, the March edition of the ‘The Parishes Magazine’ or via the School Office.

Wishing you all a very relaxing weekend,

With kind regards
