Nursery learning week 4

Hello again Nursery children and families,

I do hope you are all keeping safe and well.

This week at Nursery we have started a new topic about animals! Here is some information on what I have been doing with my Monday-Tuesday ‘island group’, Mrs Trevett will be doing the same with her Thursday-Friday ‘island group’. Please feel free to use any of the ideas below or extend on them in your own way at home.

We read the story ‘Walking Through The Jungle’ by Julie Lacome. We acted out the story in the garden, experimenting with moving in different ways. We then drew or painted animals from the story. We thought about and discussed the colour, shape and size of the animals, how many legs they have and any other distinguishing features they have – such as a trunk!
We have continued practising our letter formation for the sounds we are learning as well as writing our name and numbers.
As always keep reading and sharing books as this has so many benefits and will promote a love of reading!
Here is a link to the book ‘Walking through the jungle’

We have been recalling the sounds we have already learnt; remembering the song, action and ditty for how to write the letter.
We learnt the songs and actions for the new sounds ‘m’ and ‘d’ .
The ‘Read Write Inc’ ditty for m is: ‘down Maisie, mountain, mountain’ .
The ditty for d is: ’round the dinosaurs bottom, up his tall neck and down to his toes’
We have been thinking of things or names starting with the sounds ‘m’ or ‘d’.
I have been sound-talking some CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words with the sounds that we have learnt and blending them together to see if the children can hear the word (e.g. mad, mat, dip, dad, sad, map etc.)
You could continue this learning using the Phonics Play website – accessing the games in Phase 2 – ‘Dragons Den’ (selecting sounds learnt) or the game ‘Picnic on Pluto’.

We did a tally chart about our favourite animal in the story ‘Walking through the jungle’. Each child marked a tally on the chart under their favourite animal and we added up the totals to see which animal was the most popular.
We have been talking about weight and used some balance scales to compare the weight of 2 objects and used the language of ‘heavy, light, heavier, lighter’ to describe them.

We have been thinking of kind things to say to each other to make us feel happy and remembering how to be a good friend.
We have also been talking about feelings and what we can do if we are feeling sad or worried about something. One strategy is talking to someone about it, we have been thinking of the people that we live with or who we see, that we can talk to.

Physical Development:
We have used Go Noodle to learn some new dances! We also challenged ourselves to learn some Yoga poses watching Cosmic Yoga! It was called ‘ Yoga Pose Universe – 10 yoga poses’. We have been counting how many seconds we can balance on one leg for. Remember to keep healthy and active with some exercise every day if you can.

You can use Mini mash, I have pinned the topics: ‘Baby Animals’, ‘Vets’, ‘Zoo’ and ‘Under the Sea’for you to access.

Feel free to adapt any of these ideas to your child’s level, or go with a topic that interests them.

I am missing you all lots! Please do keep me updated with what you are getting up to, it is so lovely to see and hear about what fantastic things you are all doing!

Have fun in the sun this week – maybe you can treat yourself to an ice cream or lolly!
Enjoy your home learning,

Miss Bowie
