Good morning Reception,

I hope you’re all doing well. This week for some maths activities I would love for you to become familiar with time. I know that understanding the time can be difficult to understand and that is why I would love for you to look at it over the week and potentially record your findings.

I would love for the children to have a look at a clock face and begin recognising o’clock. At 9 o’clock what are they doing? Are they sleeping or having breakfast? What are they doing at 12 o’clock? Are they having some free time or some lunch?

Here are some ways you might like to document your activities;

  • Cut and create your own large clock face using any construction pieces at home. Using some large card or cardboard may work best (but if not some plain A4 paper would be great). Go through the o’clocks with them. Hopefully they will begin asking questions about the long and short hand. This may also inspire them to look at the time of day more often and recognise what they may be doing.
  • Create a ‘Time Diary’. Ask the children to draw what the clock face looks like and ask them what they are doing. It could be a picture of a clock at 3 o’clock and they could be drawing or playing.
  • Play ‘Whats the time Mr Wolf?’ but maybe showing them the arm signals for 3 o’clock, one hand is always at the top but where would the 3 be? This could be played later in the week once the children have seen the clock face often.
  • Singing Hickory Dickory Dock and ask the children to practise on their arms what the clock might look like too!

Any other activites you come up with would be great to see! Be as creative as you would like and I would love to see some pictures or even videos of your singing on the class email!

I have attached a link to some youtube clips that the children can watch too! The ‘What’s the Time?’ song does reference briefly quarter to and quarter past but please don’t worry about that! The song is overall really catchy and good for the children to see the different o’clocks and hopefully they notice that some things change and stay the same!

I hope you’re all safe and we hope to see you soon!
