This week in Year 6

Welcome back to our new half term! This week we have continued our work with fractions – learning how to add and subtract them. The children have explored the importance of finding a common denominator in order to be able to add and subtract fractions successfully. Next week we will move on to focus on fractions, decimals and percentages and converting between the three.

In English we have been considering Remembrance week and explored some powerful poems. The children took inspiration from ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrea and ‘Where the Poppies Now Grow’ by Hilary Robinson. The children then created their own poem in the form of a cinquain (pronounced sin-cane). Next week we consider Parliament week and will be creating persuasive arguments.

In Computing we started a new unit where we are exploring coding and how we can make our own Fitbit. The children explored how a Mircobit could be used to display a message and show images. The children really enjoyed the session and are looking forward to next week. The Microbits are fantastic pieces of kit and a great introduction to coding. A whole kits cost around £18 (perhaps a fantastic Christmas present!) If you would like to find out more, please visit the Microbit website.

Have a great weekend.
